How to Reduce Outside Noise When Living in an Apartment

There are many advantages to living in an apartment block. Price, convenience (as in their proximity to popular destinations) and community (i.e. your friends and neighbours) are a few. In addition to this, they’re also relatively hassle-free, since you only have to take care of your immediate living space. On the flip side, with a full-sized house you are responsible for the entire outside and possibly the garden.

For those people that like the convenience of living in a dense area (where they’re close to the things that they want to be close to), apartment blocks are great.

Saying that, there are also a few disadvantages. One of the main problems with living in a condominium (especially in the middle of a city) is that it can be extremely noisy (due to traffic and the sheer number of people around). Getting some peace and quiet often seems like an impossible task. For this problem, however, roller window shades might be the answer.

By purchasing the right window roller shades you can reduce noise without sacrificing style. Although you can obviously use any kind of window treatment that you like in your home, roller window shades (and roll up blinds) are the best if you want to cut out noise, and I’ll explain why.

The typical roller window shade has at least one layer of fabric across the back. These layers, combined with the fact that these shades can fit right up against the edges of the window frame (and even be pinned/velcro’d/stuck on there if necessary) means that they’re effective at preventing noise from entering the window, and since the window is the thinnest part of the exterior of most properties, this is where most of the outside noise makes its way in from.

There are actually lots of different designs of roll up window shades when it comes to how they actually do what they do. I’m not talking in terms of looks; I’m talking in terms of practicality. Some consist merely of a few layers of fabric, whereas more expensive window shades may have honeycombed cells built into the design. These hollow honeycomb shapes are particularly effective at stopping sound, heat and light passing through them (don’t ask me how!)

In conclusion, if you’re looking to lower the amount of outside noise you get in your home, try using roller window shades to block it out!
