Finding the Right Patio Door Blinds for Your Home
If you own a door that goes out to your patio (sometimes known as a French door), it’s probably 80% glass (at least). Having patio door blinds to cover such an exposed area is always a good idea, since they can give you much needed privacy when required, as well as having the ability to open and give you the full view of the outdoors when you wish to see it.
Naturally (as with all things) there are lots of different types of French door blinds on the market – each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. The main differences between most of them are usually what they look like, as well as how functional they are (i.e. some are more practical than others). The ‘functionality vs. looks’ debate can rage on forever, but at the end of the day it’s best just to choose something that you like the look of that also does the job that you want it to.
While you can use curtains to cover your patio doors, blinds are far neater and get the job done just as well (if not better). The two main types of patio door blinds that everything can be boiled down to are vertical and horizontal.
The main benefit of using horizontal patio blinds is that you can regulate how much light is coming in your window with consummate ease. This type usually has lots of horizontal slats (that go across the window) placed on top of each other. The only real downside to these blinds is that they don’t fit properly onto every kind of door (they won’t usually fit onto sliding glass doors) so you need to make sure that what you’ve got will fit the type of door you have.
Vertical blinds, on the other hand, consist of a series of slats that run top to bottom along the window. They give a very different look to their horizontal counterparts, and are usually either open or close completely. Because of the extra weight that these patio door blinds carry, they don’t typically last as long as other kinds of blinds (unless you buy an extremely high quality one).
In addition to these two types of blind, there are other kinds of sliding door blinds available. For example, you can get fabric Roman shades that consist of one large piece of fabric that runs the whole way down the window. These window treatments are great because they’re easy to hand make, meaning they’re extremely cheap (if you know what you’re doing) and you can customize them to your heart’s content.
If you live in an area where the temperature is either really hot or really cold, it’s definitely worth getting a patio door blind that insulates your home and stops the air escaping from your home. In the winter this means that you can keep your home heated more easily by trapping the warm air in your home, and in the summer this means that you can keep the cool air inside your home, whilst drawing down the blind to keep the sun (and any extra heat) out. This is a major advantage and is something that should not be overlooked, since your comfort should be priority one.
