Room Darkening Cellular Shades – Frequently Asked Questions
While you may have heard of room darkening cellular shades, you might have never seen them or know why they’re so popular. The idea behind them (as the name cleverly suggests) is to darken the room which they’re covering the window(s) of. But don’t all window treatments darken rooms, so why are these so special? While this statement is certainly true, by using a room darkening cellular shade you are able to darken your room to near pitch black in the daytime (when the sun is up). Most other curtains, blinds and shades can’t do this, since they all natural light to seep through their materials.
Why are they called cellular shades? If you look at them sideways on, you’ll notice that they’re made up of little hexagons (i.e. six sided shapes) all stacked on top of one another. The area in between each shape is often hollow. They work at blocking out the sun because although they are just one shade, they have two layers (i.e. an outside and an inside layer). Another benefit of this is that they’re actually pretty light, making them easy to pull up and down and extremely cheap (especially when you compare them to other kinds of room darkening shades).
What might you use them for? There are two main uses for room darkening blinds and shades. Firstly, they are used by those that need to sleep in the daytime (possibly because you work a night shift). Secondly, they can help conserve energy. If you live in an especially warm area where you get a lot of sunlight, chances are that you’ve got an air conditioning unit installed in your home. While these are great, they require a lot of energy to run. By blocking out some of the sun (and therefore the heat) from entering your home with cellular shades, you are able to use your air con less, thus saving money and energy. To prove how popular this is now becoming, the US Government has announced that they are dedicated to helping people install these kinds of window treatments in their home since they’re trying to save energy now.
Can I get room darkening shades in different styles, patterns and colors? The simple answer is ‘Yes, you can!’ Many people think of these blinds as looking all the same, since they’re think that they’re main purpose is to block out light and not to look good. This couldn’t be further from the truth in reality, and they can offer a very clean, suave and modern look to your home.
I have small children and I’m worried about them getting trapped in the cord. What can I do? This is actually a fairly common problem, and most people that have it tend to use cordless cellular blinds instead.
Room darkening cellular shades are one of those simple inventions (if you want to call them an invention) that everyone wishes they had come up with, since they’re so stupidly simple yet effective.
