What are Pinch Pleat Drapes?
If you have a window in your home that needs covering, but you’re not entirely sure which kind of window treatment to go for, why not try pinch pleat drapes (or perhaps pinch pleat curtains)? These kinds of drapes can really add a touch of class to a room, since they’re a little fancier than your average window treatment!
So where does the name come from? These drapes are usually made in such a way that the vertical lines down them look like they’ve been ‘pinched’ together (hence the name). When used in the right situation, these drapes can really complement the existing look of a bedroom or a dining room. They are especially effective when used on long, wide windows, where the pinched effect can really be seen in detail.
It’s important to note, however, that these kinds of drapes won’t fit in with the décor of any kind of room and that they’re more suited to traditional and classic looking styles (rather than modern and minimalistic styles).
Due to their increasing popularity, pinch pleated drapes and curtains are now readily available (at least to order, anyways) in most good curtain shops. They can usually be found in a large variety of sizes, styles (since there are many different pinch styles – from double pinch to the ‘butterfly’), colours and materials. As well as buying them from curtain stores, one can also now find the online (although it’s harder to get a sense of what the finished article will look like when shopping online, so I recommend shopping in your local high street instead).
The pucker (i.e. the pinch) is usually located around five or six inches from the top (and sometimes they are found all the way down). One additional benefit to using these kinds of drapes is that they provide an extra level of insulation that you wouldn’t get with ‘ordinary’ curtains. Because of this, they’re often used to cover glass door and outside patio doors, where insulation is most needed (because the warm air can easily escape).
Pinch pleat drapes can be made from all different kinds of materials (as most drapes can), such as silk, linen, velvet and many more. That being said, if you’re planning on creating your own pinched drapes then you need to make sure that the fabric that you decide to use is fairly heavy, so that it pulls the drapes straight down and helps create the pinched effect. Making these kinds of drapes yourself is not easy (and should not be attempted by beginners) but if you want something special that you can’t find anywhere else then it’s definitely worth creating them yourself. The reason that they’re so difficult to manually make is because you need to line up each pinch perfectly all the way across the drapes or you’ll be left with something that looks extremely sloppy (even if some of the pinches are only a little bit out of line) that may do more harm than good!
