Making Your Own Hanging Curtain Room Dividers

In your home, there are certain things that you add in to compliment the décor. For example, adding hanging curtain room dividers to a room is one way of doing this, and the colors and patterns on them can add an extra dimension to the room. Much like how clothing can clash, so too can curtain room dividers and the room that they’re in, so take special care when choosing one for your home.

The fact is that hanging room dividers can actually be quite expensive to purchase (especially if you want a nice one that’s made properly). If you’re the kind of person that enjoys making things or doing DIY, you might want to consider making one yourself (to save money and hopefully to have fun whilst doing so!)

Before you can actually make a curtain room divider you need to know which kind you want. There are basically two popular kinds out there (although several people have made their own variations of these), which are hanging curtain room dividers and folding flat panel dividers.

Folding screen room dividers are what most people are familiar with, and are what most people think of when they think of room dividers. They are often used to change behind, and were popular in Victorian times. They are traditionally made from around 3 or 4 different panels all attached together on hinges. These hinges work in such a way that the screen can be folded up to the size of one of the panels.

When making panel room dividers such as this you can make them from whatever you like as long as it’s solid. Despite this, I recommend that you stick with wood (which most people do) because it’s cheap and easy to use. After you’ve made the actual screen divider you can always decorate it by adding fabric over the top or by painting it, so you shouldn’t worry too much about what it looks like.

If you want to make a hanging curtain room divider you need to go about it a completely different way, since you’ll be hanging it from the ceiling instead of having it rest on the floor. One of the best ways of doing this is by getting a curtain track that you can slide your divider across. This means that you can retract it when you need to, so that it’s not always out and in the way. As with the panel dividers, hanging curtain dividers are also easy to make (if you know your way around a sewing machine) since they’re not too different from regular curtains. Another option with these is to use beads instead of fabric. Curtains such as these are very popular in the Eastern part of the world.
