The Benefits of Using a Folding Room Divider

The great thing about folding room dividers (also occasionally known as portable room dividers) is that (as the name suggests) they can be easily folded up and moved to another location (which might be to another part of the room or a storage cupboard). The typical folding screen room divider is made up of either 3 or 4 panels (any more would be too difficult to handle) that are all attached via hinges on the side. When they fold up they retract into the size of one of these panels (with the other panels all overlapping).

In the modern world, where many people live in studio apartments (especially when living in big cities such as New York), it’s vital that they make the most of the space that they have. In such apartments the kitchen, living room and sometimes the office area are all connected together (without any meaningful walls in between them), so using a screen room divider is a great way to break up the space and to create a ‘virtual wall’.

In the past, room dividers were used to section off a corner of the room (usually the bedroom) so that people could change behind them (since the screen gives you an area of privacy). You’ll often see these screens in period dramas on the television, where the maid comes into the girl’s bedroom and asks her to get dressed. This added element of privacy is still something that we can use today, and many people use folding room dividers when guests come round to stay with them, so that they have a place to change behind (this is especially handy if they’re staying in the same room as you).

Such room dividers have also long been used by the Japanese, and their minimalistic style can really be seen in some of the designs out on the market today. The Asian versions of this product are usually constructed out of wood and use a white-ish bamboo paper for the screen section.

While they may appear to do the same job as curtain room dividers, they are actually more versatile because they aren’t anchored to the same place (since a curtain room divider is stuck to the curtain rail that it’s attached to).

Another more practical use of the folding room divider is to use it to hide/corner off a small section of a room. Perhaps you have guests coming round (whom you want to impress) and you have an extremely messy area in the corner of your living room. Throwing up a quick folding screen is a great way to (almost) instantaneously get rid of all of the mess.
